not all photographed locations should be shared on social media

We know it may seem counter intuitive to have a website advertising Big Sur while asking visitors to keep certain locations a secret. Over-visitation to many bucket list destinations has caused them to be less enjoyable and even damaged in some cases. Plants, animals, and the environment all suffer when crowds of humans ignore guidelines and laws to get photos and videos  for social media. We understand that Big Sur not a secret by any means, but as we move forward together, let's make sure we are considerate guests. We suggest sharing your photos without detailed location information.

“Travel and tell no one, live a true love story and tell no one, live happily and tell no one, people ruin beautiful things.”

- Kahlil Gibran.

The secret is not to tell the secret

You won't catch us sharing GPS data or encouraging crowds. In fact, we hope you will quietly experience your own adventures here and let people wonder where your photos were taken. Normalize not sharing! It's one of the best ways we can protect Big Sur's most sacred places...

where is monterey canyon?

Underwater National Park, Monterey Canyon

A secret we don't mind sharing is one  that's hidden deep under the coastal waters just north of Big Sur- an underwater version of the Grand Canyon! Monterey Canyon is a large reason for the wealth of wildlife that migrate north and south along the coast to feed in this invisible but magical abyss.

Traffic, litter, car accidents and frustration... those aren't what we want people to think of when they hear the words Big Sur. Sadly, in recent years, visitation has caused an increase in all of the above. How can you make a difference? Take the Big Sur Pledge and drive safely.
