Hiking

Big Sur has hundreds of miles of trails to explore. Stick to marked paths. Going off trail might seem ok but you could be walking on endangered plants or putting yourself in danger of crumbling cliffs, ticks, snakes, etc. Leave no trace and bring any valuable items with you to avoid theft. There is no cell service in this area so carry a beacon for rescues if going any distance. You will love your adventures in Big Sur so long as you use common sense. Our favorite hike? We love the Pfeiffer Falls Trail at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.

Hiking

Bicycles are not allowed on all of Big Sur's trails so make sure you check where you're allowed to ride. Of course, you may be one of the bucket list types that wants to bike the PCH/Highway 1. Either way, you'll find epic views that you can take in at your own pace. North in Monterey you'll find bike paths along the coast from 17 Mile Drive to Fort Ord. There are multiple bike rentals in town including e-bikes, and 4 -wheeled, canopy-covered cycles called surreys that have room for friends and families who want to ride together.  More information available below.

Gear and surfboard rentals can be found in Monterey. There are several locations that offer lessons and classes. From beginner to expert you'll find whatever you need to have fun in the water. Try snorkeling and paddle boarding if you're feeling more mellow.

Elkhorn Slough and Monterey Bay are a wonderful place to get up close and personal with otters. Bring your own kayak or rent! Coming to view the otters, whales and wildlife here helps support their preservation, just keep a safe distance and make sure to follow laws and regulations.
